Programme Notes, (Musical Director Stuart Cates)
The Concert this afternoon begins with a march " Old Comrades" It was composed around 1889, by the composer of Military music Carl Teike. Allegedly, when presented with the newly written march the conducter of his band told him to dispose of it as they had sufficient march music. The composition was saved and later became one of the most popular and played German military marches. It is also internationally popular, as it was even after World War II where it was frowned on playing German marches.
Also included is the popular melody "Highland Cathedral" which was composed by German musicians Ulrich Roever & Michael Korb in 1982 for the Highland games held in Germany. It has been proposed as the Scottish national anthem to replace the unofficial anthems "Scotland the Brave" and/or "Flower of Scotland". The brass band arrangement is by David Lancaster.
